Bluetrue paid AU$88 for its domain name
for two years through Westnet (also Bluetrue's host).
A good domain name should be easy to
remember, easy to spell, and preferably short. The
name of your company is always a good choice. If your
desired domain name is already taken, you can search
if the .net or .org variation is available. The .net
extension is suitable for communication-based companies.
You may also use numbers, hyphens and periods to create
unique domain names. You cannot use spaces, underscores,
or other punctuation. You cannot begin or end with
a hyphen. And domain names are not case sensitive.
Originally, the three letter suffix
after the dot in domain names indicated whether the
domain name was used for commercial (.COM), network
(.NET), or non-profit (.ORG) purposes. Although these
are guidelines, anyone may register these regardless
of the intended use.
To purchase a .au domain name, you must
be an Australian registered business and provide your
ABN number when making your purchase.
.com, .net, and .org domain names must
meet these requirements: They cannot exceed 67 characters,
including the characters in the suffix (63 characters
plus the 4 character .xyz). Only letters, numbers,
or hyphens are permitted. A domain name may not begin
or end with a hyphen. These requirements are part
of the regulatory standards that .com, .net and .org
domain names must follow.
Probably not. Most web sites just advertise
www.widgets.com.au. The www. is a good enough clue
to people that it's a web address, so you don't need
to say it. All popular browsers let you simply type
www.widgets.com.au into the URL window.
You may register and own an unlimited
number of domain names. In addition to .com or .com.au,
many people register the .net and .org variations
of their primary domain name. If you already have
registered a domain name, you can leave it with your
current provider or ask your provider about transferring
to another provider.
When you register a domain name you
may designate the Registrant (owner) and Administrator.
As the Registrant, you have final
authority and responsibility regarding the use of
your domain name. Most will register their domain
for a period of two years. Once that two years has
passed, you will then need to re-register your domain
name. Should you choose not to re-register your domain
name, that name will then become available for others
to take.
Changing a domain name is not possible.
You must register a new domain name and then keep
or cancel the old one.
A public domain name database (also
known as Whois) contains contact information for all
domain names. There are many registrars that register
.com, .net and .org domain names. Each of these registrars
maintain their own public domain database.
The personal contact information you
provide as the registrant and administrative contact
is used to register your domain name. As required
by the internet's governing organisation (ICANN),
this information will be made publicly available.
Records of all domain names registered
by the registrar are maintained in their public domain
database. The information includes registrant, administrator,
technical contact, and nameserver information as well
as record creation, update, and expiration dates.
This information is available through many publicly
accessible interfaces.
The personal information you provide
in your order is used to register your domain name.
As required by ICANN, the internet governance organisation,
this information will be made publicly available.
If you would like to change or update this contact
information, you'll need to contact your registrar.
