A web page is an electronic document. A web page
document contains text, graphics and multimedia, and because it
uses hypertext, it can be interactive. Web page documents can
be opened and viewed with a program called a "browser".
Most importantly, web pages can be viewed by almost any kind of
computer using a browser.
In many ways, browsers are similar to
other programs on your PC. Just as your word processor program
is needed to open a word processing document, a browser is needed
to open and view a web page document. However, a browser can not
only open documents on your own PC, but when connected to the
internet, it can instantly open web page documents published on
other computers anywhere in the world.
The ability to share web
page documents in this way with anyone around the world makes
the internet so significant for business, marketing, education,
and information exchange. Web pages did for the internet what
Windows did for DOS.
